From the opening thunder of guitars to the lush string sections, Blue Cactus’s self-titled debut album is a rhinestone-studded tour through their smooth, prickly brand of “modern classic country.” Some songs are sewn together with cheeky puns, while others bleed with varied shades of heartbreak. All are adorned with intricate arrangements to match embroidered western wear. The band, led by Mario Arnez & Steph Stewart, is based in Chapel Hill, NC. They are currently booking festivals and tours in support of the album released last February.
In describing the new album, Arnez says that these songs were written in no uncertain terms. “They were inspired by moments that seemed to appear in our lives as if someone had been dropping little secrets amongst the absurdities of everyday life. There is no umbrella to shield humanity from the rain of country music tropes, and we are happy to sing sad songs.”
From gritty honky-tonk to heart-breaking balladry, Blue Cactus is the one stop shop for everything that made country music matter. One prick & you’re stuck.
